World Travels in West University

Playing off the client’s love of travel, Vernon created this modern eclectic space in a very traditional West University home. Both from Europe, the couple wanted their home to reflect their world view and travels.

The entry hall is the “train station” with antique travel posters and a train station clock cantilevered from the wall. The library palette of white and beige included bold pops of color from the beautiful book collection, oversized chess pieces, antique map of Europe and rug. Across, the dining room is very simple with a 5-globe chandelier and custom-designed Frank Fuzzy wall decals in the shape of compasses on the walls, ceiling and dipping below the chair rail. In both rooms the windows are topped with custom white linen cornice boards.

Through the entry hall, his office is a beautiful oak-paneled study with a tall Georgian-framed mirror, antique prayer rugs and a double-leg, hand made desk with leather inserts by the company that manufactures the desk for each U.S. President in the Oval Office. The artwork includes antique lithographs and travel posters as well as an original drawing by contemporary artist Eric Zimmerman.

At the end of the hall, the living room, connected to the breakfast room and kitchen, is flush with floor-to-ceiling windows. The Asian-inspired space continues with a base palette of white and beige adding accents of red and black. Antique travel posters and an antique botanical print bring the themes of travel and the garden together. The breakfast room features a large, round breakfast table and bright, green leather chairs under a wall of family photos. Vernon’s terrariums are placed throughout the first floor, further bringing the garden indoors.

West University

The master bedroom glows with hues of soft blue and gold. Vernon custom-painted two exisitng chests of drawers, outlining Asian botanical shapes in gold leaf. The low, platform bed carries the calm glow to a sitting area with a petite sofa, coffee table and beautiful Indonesian sitting chair. Custom, black-out draperies tie the room’s palette toghether in a tonal plaid.

The light, bright nursery walls are custom-painted in a “grass” green and “sky” blue,  separated by a clean white stripe creating an outdoor feel. The complete are a menagerie of animal stickers.

The guest apartment was completely remodeled to enlarge the bathroom and create a true guest suite. The carpet was replaced with travertine marble and the bathroom walls with white hexagonal tiles accented by random green glass inserts and a thin green glass tile border. Double-sinks were added and wall-to-wall mirrors further expand the space. Vernon custom-painted the walls with abstract mountains in five shades of soft, soothing green. Guests can truly relax and retreat in this lovely space.
